Freedom Day: 27 April

Freedom Day is a time to reflect on the journey South Africa has taken and the freedoms we value today. Celebrated on 27 April, it commemorates the country’s first democratic election in 1994, when citizens of all races were able to vote together for the first time, marking the beginning of a constitutional democracy founded on equality, dignity and freedom.

Freedom is not only about history, but about the opportunities we continue to create for one another. It shows itself in many forms, including the freedom to learn, to choose different educational pathways, and to be supported as individuals. Access to education, fairness in assessment and respect for diversity all play a role in building a society where people can reach their potential.

At Tutors & Exams South Africa, we recognise that freedom in education means offering inclusive, flexible and fair assessment options. It means acknowledging different learning journeys and ensuring that every candidate is given the opportunity to succeed with dignity.

On this Freedom Day, we reflect on the progress made, honour the responsibility that comes with freedom, and recommit ourselves to supporting learners in ways that are equitable, respectful and empowering.
