USAf vs SAQA: What’s the Difference?
If you are completing an international curriculum in South Africa, you may have heard the terms USAf and SAQA and wondered whether they are the same thing.
They aren’t, and understanding the difference can make planning your next steps much easier.
USAf (Universities South Africa), through its Matriculation Board, is particularly important for candidates with international school-leaving qualifications who want to pursue first-degree studies at a South African university. The Matriculation Board evaluates these qualifications against the requirements for matriculation exemption and issues an exemption certificate to candidates who meet the applicable requirements.
Importantly, receiving an exemption does not automatically guarantee admission to a particular university or programme. Candidates must still meet the institution and faculty’s own admission requirements.
SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) has a different role. SAQA evaluates foreign qualifications to determine how they compare within the South African National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Its process includes verifying the qualification and awarding institution, and then comparing the qualification with South African qualifications to determine where it sits on the NQF.
So, a simple way to remember the difference is:
USAf = Matriculation exemption for university degree study in South Africa.
SAQA = Evaluation and recognition of foreign qualifications within the South African NQF.
Depending on what you plan to do after completing your qualification, you may encounter one or both processes.
The most important thing is to start with the end in mind. Research the requirements of your chosen university, course, employer or institution early so that you know exactly what documentation and recognition you will need.
At Tutors & Exams South Africa, we believe that understanding the pathway ahead is just as important as preparing for the exams that get you there.
