Understanding the Requirements and Process

The South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) is overseeing the development and implementation of the NQF. Homeschool graduates with an international or foreign matric can apply for a Certificate of Evaluation from SAQA to convert it into an SA matric. This is only necessary if a college admissions department or employer requests it.

Who is SAQA?

Homeschool graduates with an international or foreign matric can apply for a Certificate of Evaluation from SAQA to convert it into an SA matric. But this is only necessary if a college admissions department or employer requests it.

What Homeschoolers Need to Know About SAQA

Suppose your child wants to attend a SA university and has an international matric such as Cambridge International Education. In that case, they will need to apply at Universities South Africa (USAf) for a South African Matric Exemption Certificate.

Which Matric Option to Choose

Home-schooled children generally look at matric options when they are around age 15. To choose a suitable matric, it is often advisable to try to work backwards from an end objective.

If a child wants to study at a South African university, it is best to contact the faculty at the university of choice and determine their entrance requirements to the specific course.

If a child wants to study in the UK, a Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel matric may be advisable.

A matriculation exemption is a legal requirement for the first-degree study at a South African university:

  • Students who did not pass Senior Certificate with endorsement are required by law to apply for a matriculation exemption through the Matriculation Board.
  • International students or students with their equivalent foreign school-leaving qualification wishing to register for first-degree studies in South Africa must have their school qualifications evaluated by the Matriculation Board that will then issue a certificate of exemption to those who qualify.

As parents, we may find the last years of home education challenging to navigate. Together with our children, we must make a suitable educational choice that will benefit our children in the future. Knowing which options are available and how these options are likely to fit into the future can help the decision process.
